ENG8 has won Prio’s JumpStart 2026 accelerator in Aveiro. The award includes a funded industrial pilot with Prio, one of Portugal’s best-known energy companies, and it takes our EnergiCell® technology a clear step closer to a live industrial setting.
The accelerator
JumpStart is a competitive 10-week programme. Ten companies won places this year, most of them established scale-ups with proven technologies, so coming through it as the winner means a great deal to a company at our stage. The programme is backed by partners including Portugal Ventures, Microsoft for Startups, Fórum Oceano, Inova-Ria and InnoEnergy, co-organised with imatch, and the municipalities of Aveiro and Ílhavo. What the award means
The part that matters most to us is what comes with the award: a funded pilot with Prio. The scope and detail are still to be agreed between us, and we will set them out once they are settled. What is already clear is the direction. It marks the clearest step yet towards running EnergiCell inside a live industrial process at a company of this standing, rather than in our own workshop, and reaching this point has taken the whole team.
The technology behind it
EnergiCell® is a modular clean-energy platform built in 100 kW units. It generates firm power on-site, around the clock and independent of the grid, and it can equally deliver clean process heat in place of a fossil-fired boiler. The units are small enough to sit behind a forecourt, inside a depot or alongside an existing boiler, and capacity is added by installing more of them.
The technology is based on ENG8’s low energy nuclear reaction (LENR) research, developed over three decades by a team of more than 30 scientists and engineers, eight of them holding doctorates. It has been independently validated on multiple occasions, and we recently reported taking the EnergiCell from laboratory scale (TRL 4) into industrial prototyping (TRL 7), which is what makes a live pilot the right next step.
LENR is an emerging field, but not a fringe one. According to publicly available records, research has been funded by bodies including the US ARPA-E, NASA and the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, studied by companies such as Toyota and Airbus, and documented across more than 1,000 peer-reviewed papers. A live pilot is where we add real industrial operating data to that record.
More than heat
Heat is where the technology is most mature, but the same platform can provide firm power and support a range of other uses, from off-grid sites to transport. Working with an energy company as broad as Prio is a good place to begin thinking about where the technology goes next.
What happens next
Our immediate focus is agreeing the shape of the pilot with Prio and getting the work under way. We will share more as it takes shape.
